The Word Viewer is a stand-alone Viewer which not implemented on top of OLE. So it should run under Linux, BeOS and other Operating-Systems. The Viewer is merely a demonstration which shows the possibilities of our PowerPoint-Compound Storage-Framework. For instance it is possible that a Search-Engine indexes the Text-Content of Word-Files. Of course this task can also be achieved using Microsoft's OLE-Infrastructure, which implies that you must have Office installed on the Server which hosts the Search-Engine. And you must accept the poor performance of the OLE-Interface. Our Smalltalk-Solution retrieves text-portions within a Word file several factors faster.
